Although they were embraced by the Los Angeles punk scene, the Blasters were always in that scene without really being of it. They were basically a high-octane rockabilly, blues, and R&B band, with an encyclopedic knowledge of American pop music history and a deep love of pretty much all of it. Their debut album was recorded by L.A. radio legend Rockin’ Ronny Weiser and has a pleasingly scrappy sound, one that fits perfectly on jumping, jiving material like “Real Rock Drive,” “Crazy Baby,” and “Flat Top Joint.” Several of these songs would later show up on the band’s slicker recordings on the Slash label.
