CODONA’s name comes from the given names of its members: Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, and Nana Vasconcelos. This humble trio made World Music before it even existed as such, setting a precedent for many border crossings to follow. Like the gong that opens the first track, “Like That Of Sky,” this self-titled debut awakens us from ourselves. Combining sitar, tabla, hammered dulcimer, trumpet, flute, percussion, and their own voices (among other instruments), the setlist spans original material and tunes by Ornette Coleman and Stevie Wonder. Despite the latter associations, we feel even familiar motifs out of place and time.
