Justin Broadrick’s reengineering of Godflesh’s signature growling monstrous electronic metal crush into the shoegaze-adjacent glowing roar of Jesu was less of a radical move than it was a careful exploration of a new approach. Broadrick’s vocal shift in particular was the key and by the time of Conqueror Jesu had fully exchanged a glower for agape wonder and empathy, the huge swells of feedback and sonic glaze suggesting a beauty that was sublime but not entirely destructive.
