If you do not know this 1968 album, you are so lucky. The vibes are immaculate. Szabó was a Hungarian jazz guitar whiz who came to California with a bag full of Eastern European melodies and a very crisp, fat clean sound. Dreams was cut with LA session royalty Gary McFarland and Jim Keltner, and the result is one of the most steadily sweet and intense albums of its kind. What is that kind? Fair question. Unadorned small ensemble wildness? But McFarland brought in the horns, to make things even more uncanny and sublime. A real classic. “Galatea’s Guitar” will absolutely convince the innocent that you are Thee Truest of Crate Diggers.
