Everybody Got Their Something

Released

A musical polyglot fluent in the languages of pop, rock and soul, Nikka Costa recalls many a Prince protégé from the ’80s on Everybody Got Their Something. As this soulful redhead belts her blues, “So Have I for You” builds into an even louder and more high-energy power ballad. “Push & Pull” similarly blazes out at the end, an otherwise melancholy love song on an album full of equally strong ones (“Just Because,” “Corners of My Mind”). The title track is nothing short of a Family Stone homage, complete with horns, mini-Moog and Fresh-era clavinet. An overlooked aughties gem.
