As Martyn’s life dissolves into an irredeemable oil slick, the records somehow stay good. In fact, the two albums with Phil Collins—this one and Grace & Danger—have a style that none of the others have. Martyn on electric guitar interruption and Collins on drums is pretty amazing, especially with a fretless bass player, here Alan Johnson. Collins produces here, which makes for a brighter mix (not necessarily better), much louder drums and some sweet Phil backing vocals.
