The “Asian Underground” movement of 90s London, which briefly built hype around the likes of Talvin Singh, Joi, State Of Bengal, Black Star Liner, Fun Da Mental and co has been oddly written out of history. But it was responsible for some glorious sounds, particularly when it fused with the more intricate strains of drum’n’bass – as in the second album by TJ Rehmi. His breakbeat editing is up there with the very best of Luke Vibert’s Wagon Christ and Plug projects, his atmospheres are heady and otherworldly, and the Indian elements incorporated without ever seeming like decoration. But then so it should be with a musician who had played with big jazz and funk names as well as producing and arranging bhangra hits, through the 80s before discovering electronic club music.
