Released

Movietone’s debut album was recorded by a group spilling over with great ideas. They emerged from the same ‘scene’ in Bristol as flying saucer attack, Crescent and Third Eye Foundation, and shared membership with all of those groups; there’s a shared sensibility there, too, but Movietone marked out their own space. The songs were deceptive – fragile at first blush, they were rigorously constructed, with the group’s intricate way of playing, winding together web-like lines of guitar and piano, building nets of song over which Kate Wright intones lyrics inspired by Beat poets. Think Velvets ballads, abstract jazz, smoky nights in – that’s the feel.
