Mysterio

Released

Opportunity would soon take Ian McCulloch on different musical paths but with Mysterio, his 1992 follow-up to Candleland, he found himself settled into a distinct musical sweet spot that captured some of the atmosphere of Echo & the Bunnymen without trying to simply clone it. The 1960s-style album art design hints at other backwards glances, such as his sturdy cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Lover Lover Lover,” but songs like “In My Head” and “Magical World” feel very comfortable in a just-pre-grunge sense (though “Honeydrip” is a little clunky).
