New Ways But Love Stays

Released

The post-Diana Ross Supremes put out two albums in 1970 and this strong collection of soul and pop was the second. It includes some genuinely top-quality covers — their swaggering take on the Beatles’ Come Together is a great example of Motown’s darker, more paranoid 70s sound and emerging from a fuzz guitar and sound fx intro, their sanctified version of Bridge Over Troubled Water is definitely one of the stronger versions you’ll hear. The album highlight is perhaps their epic hit Stoned Love, which is all sweeping strings, a pounding 4/4 Motown beat and impassioned vocals, the soul music equivalent of standing on a cliff in a gale.
