Mackenzie’s one solo album released in his lifetime was also his final major label effort, one that didn’t land as it should despite his deep interest in early 1990s European techno, with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann providing the bulk of the collaboration this time around. Outernational is a solid rebound from the too-smooth parts of Wild and Lonely, and if sometimes just serviceable, as with the cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise,” other songs like “Baby,” another wonderful collaboration with Yello, and the title track are strong moments.
