Post Scriptum is, appropriately enough, the follow-up to 2007’s Currents, which marked the ECM leader debut of Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode. This time around, the same quartet with clarinetist Claudio Puntin, bassist Mats Eilertsen, and drummer Samuel Rohrer takes on a broad spectrum of original material. The 20-minute suite that opens the set shows a theatrical mind at work in Brederode, whose ability to pull big from small captivates. Atmosphere abounds, though grooves are never far away (e.g., “Inner Dance”). Contributions from his bandmates rattle the cage of expectation without sacrificing the value of familiarity.
