Power Clown

UK uber-funk-jazz-electronica-hybrid outfit Fila Brazillia’s Power Clown was a further impressive addition to their catalogue. The thirteen tracks showcase their ability to integrate sampling, live instrumentations and studiology, and to meld disparate musical elements into their own very particular musical vision. Slo-mo funk, jazz of many flavours — acid, future, breakbeat, modern, alt-library music, dub and folk flavours are all worked in together, with continually pleasing results: “Throwing Down A Shape” starts out as growling low-end heavy electro then somehow wonderfully morphs into a kind of melancholy techno jazz thing, while “President Chimp Toe” mixes smooth synth washes, acoustic guitar licks, harp flourishes, and a layer of pattering bongos and congos to create something that could be soul, could be a soundtrack, could be a new sub-genre of funk. It’s dense, rich, idiosyncratic and intriguing: another Fila Brazillia treasure trove.
