Dunno what happened to Lee Dorrian between 2002’s The VIIth Coming and this (other than a few notable world events), but he sounds pissed here. Their eighth psalm may be the angriest moment from these doom overlords — tracks like “The Tree of Life and Death” even border on groove metal. It also has some of their catchiest moments, whether it’s “North Berwick Witch Trials”’s hook-filled history lesson or “Corpsecycle”’s fossil-fueled madness. Speaking of madness: “The Garden” takes up 27 minutes of insanity, the band’s most ambitious composition by far. Not all of it works, sure, but you’ll never get bored as you wander through its twisting, twisted hedge maze.
