This version of TD, with Schulze, Peter Baumann and Chris Franke, is not the spookiest version of the band, because there is no such thing. Until the Eighties, Froese is simply the spookiest of all Germans. But this one is really special in terms of how perfectly the band can hold a mood and make it burn. The title track is truly indispensable, something I have played for dozens of people over the years when they ask about freaky German music from the Seventies. More than many of these albums, Atem rides very consistently through as one coherent thought. I do not know what space this music is describing but I’ve always suspected Ridley Scott was playing this music when he imagined how Alien might look.
