A 1969 session featuring an all-star band of European improvisers: Brötzmann, saxophonist Evan Parker, guitarist Derek Bailey, pianist Fred Van Hove, bassist Buschi Niebergall, and drummer Han Bennink. It’s an intriguing contrast of styles: the British players were intent on distancing themselves from jazz clichés, while Brötzmann was absolutely not, and the “rhythm section” rattled and clanged, demanding equal time and getting it. On Side B, with Parker and Bailey gone, the music is more spacious and even bluesy, beginning with an extended bass-drums exploration.
